Painted Rug
I've been interested in (life-sized) painted rugs for a while now. There are loads of images on Pinterest, everything from stripes to chevrons. When I was making my daughter's roombox, I thought I would experiment making a painted mini rug. I had some cream canvas I bought and never used, and it seemed to have the right weight and texture for a mini rug.
I taped a piece of canvas to my work table, and then taped strips of masking tape to the fabric. I then used 2 colours of Americana acrylic paint (Blue Mist, which is the greenish colour, and Winter Blue). I didn't want to paint it on, as the paint may bleed underneath the tape. I used triangular make-up sponges to paint the stripes.
Put a blob of paint in a container, dip your sponge in it, dab off the excess paint, and paint the stripes by dragging the sponge between 2 strips of tape. If the sponge gets too dry, add some fresh paint by dipping, dabbing and dragging (sounds like exercise!).
Start with a piece of fabric a bit larger than the final size, to allow for little mishaps to be cut out. I did this as an experiment, but it turned out so well, that I kept it. The canvas I have has a frayed edge on one of the self-edges, so I kept that for the one edge. For the other side, I glued a piece of fringe underneath the rug. I glued in a seam on both long edges of the rug.
