Scene in a Book
At one of the workshops at the Cape Town Miniaturia Guild, Jim Douglas presented a scene in a book workshop. The basic structure was put together at the workshop, but then it was up the individual to decide what to do inside the "book".
My mother passed away in 1994, but I still miss her very much. She loved baking, and had all these handwritten recipes on the back of envelopes and scraps of paper. I kept most of those recipes and put it in a folder. I wanted to make a kitchen scene using her favorite things, but I also wanted to use the recipes somewhere. The scene in the book provided the opportunity to use both.

I scanned and resized the recipes, made a collage, and then photocopied the page. I glued it to the inside of the book cover. It just added that personal touch.
The kitchen cabinets were made with matt board (used by framers), the "metal" strip around the cabinet top is metallic paper. The dark red and cream colour scheme resembles our kitchen back in the sixties, when I was little. The sink is from Houseworks, and the water was made with Scenic Water. My bubbles were a flop, a condition which wasn't helped by the guy at the framer where I took my box to have the glass cut, who poked his finger in there and popped the remaining bubbles!
The messy side is on the left. The open recipe book in the corner is by Barbara Brear, and the adorable eggbox by Heather James. The envelope and letters on the shelf are actual letters, written by my Grandfather back in the 1960's, that I scaled down.
I made the towel holder and paper towels against the wall, the baking sheet, spoon and mixing bowl with leftover batter on the draining board.

The right side of the scene shows the result of the mess! I made the cake and the teapot, the fruit bowl, as well as the the crumpled dish cloth in the corner. The cup of tea is by Heather James. I scanned my mother's favourite recipe books and resized it to make mini books to put on the shelf.
The African Violet plant, another big favourite of my mother's, was made by Erica Gross.
